The Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is offering a one-week Practicum in Mammography for Radiologic Technologists. The 5 day course, Monday through Friday, provides 40 hours of mammography education in a university setting with strong emphasis on clinical application.

It is designed to train the technologist to perform high quality mammography, satisfying the standards set by the FDA, The American College of Radiology and the State of California Rules of Good Practice. The curriculum includes physics and technical factors, quality assurance, basic and advanced positioning, patient relations and history, early detection of breast cancer, film critique and extensive clinical experience.

Clinical Workshop
Each student participates in a lab/workshop the first afternoon with 4 full hours of positioning with a live model. In addition, each student spends two four hour afternoons assisting an experienced, accredited technologist in positioning patients.

 


Ability to bend, kneel and squat
Full use of both arms, hands and fingers
Push and pull a 200-250 lb. Nuclear Medicine machine
Ability to work standing greater than 75% of the time
Effectively communicate with patients and relatives
Effectively communicate with Mammography Technologists.

 



You are expected to arrive on time and attend all scheduled ides and clinical rotations unless you have an approved absence.
You must conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.
You must adhere to all policies regarding the program and all policies required by each hospital clinical affiliate.

 



Certification:
Students who complete the Mammography Practicum receive a certificate of completion and are eligible to take the California Department of Health Examination for registration as a CRT, (M).

Credits:
This course has been approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) for 37 hours of continuing education credit. Reference No. CAZ0210001

 


The tuition for the one-week course, syllabus, parking, and daily continental breakfast is $600.

You are responsible for your own certification examinations and all living expenses.
